Patrons may place hold/reserve requests on items that are currently checked out. When a patron places an item on hold/reserve, he/she is placed in a queue (waiting list) in first-come first-served order. When the item becomes available, the Circulation Services staff will notify the patron by telephone, E-mail or postcard. The patron has up to nine days to pick up the held/reserved item. Items not picked up will pass on to the next patron in the queue.
Due to the high volume of requests, there is a $1.00 charge for all reserved items not picked up.
There are several ways that patrons may reserve items:
- In the library at a catalog computer station
- In the library at the Circulation, Information or Youth Services desks
- On the Internet using the WebPAC
- By telephone with one of the three public service desks (Information Desk, Youth Services Desk, Circulation Desk)
Request Items in Our Catalog
The Johnson City Public Library has a courier arrangement with the other libraries of the Northeast Tennessee Library Network. The entire collection of the network is available for searching online. Books that are available at other libraries in the network can be requested through the courier service by placing a request through the library online catalog.
Some items are not eligible for loan, and any requests placed on these items will be cancelled. Some items not available for loan are:
- New books
- Audio Books
- Books that are currently in high demand.
The owning library has the discretion as to whether or not an item is loaned.
To place a request on a book that appears at a location other than Johnson City Public Library, call or come by the Circulation Desk on the first floor or the Information Desk on the second floor. Contact Circulation at 423-434-4455 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. Contact Information at 423-434-4454 or by e-mail at email@example.com.
Request Items Not in Our Catalog
If a book you need is not available in our library or in the Northeast Tennessee Library Network, we can try to obtain the item through Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan is a courtesy extended among most libraries in the United States. While this service is free within the state of Tennessee, libraries in other states may charge ($10.00 minimum) for this service, and we pass this charge along to you. To request a book by Interlibrary Loan, call or come by the Information Desk on the second floor. Our phone number is 434-4454 or you can send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Reference staff will make every effort to secure books and photocopies for users with JCPL Library Cards in good standing. Please come to the Information Desk on the second floor to make ILL requests. Be prepared to provide as much information as possible about the requested item.
There are a few exclusions to this service:
- Books published within the last year may not be requested.
- Audio-visual materials such as videos and sound recordings may not be requested.
- Photocopies are limited to 20 pages and must comply with copyright requirements.
- Genealogical materials are not usually available for loan.
We will be happy to provide you with locations for materials not available for loan.
