Library Clerk I

Johnson City Public Library Youth Services Department has an opening for a Library Clerk I. The main function of this position includes assisting children and young adults in finding the books and other library materials they want and need through use of our online catalog, registering children for special programs and assisting with internet use. Included but not limited to this position will be doing preliminary searches in journals, checking out books for librarians, assisting with departmental decorations and other duties as assigned.

We are looking for someone who enjoys children and wants to be part of a dynamic team dedicated to excellent service.

This is an hourly position with no fringe benefits.  Starting pay in this classification is $9.75 per hour.  The typical schedule will be 18 hours per week.  Evening and weekend work is required.

Library Clerk II

Johnson City Public Library Adult Services Department has a part-time opening for a Library Clerk II. Providing technical help and informational/research assistance to the public are the main functions of this position.  Included but not limited to this position are updating records and lists, reviewing journals and providing general library support.

We are looking for an approachable person with excellent communications skills who is able to interact professionally and effectively with the public. The successful candidate will be part of a busy team dedicated to exceptional customer service and will work under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager. Evening and weekend work is required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of library services and ability to learn specialized library methods.
  • Comfortable working with and troubleshooting computers and other electronic devices.
  • Ability to work effectively with the general public.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Ability to participate in collection development, programs and marketing activities.
  • Possesses good communication skills and is capable of conducting her/his self in a professional manner at all times.

Desirable Experience and Education:  Advanced education, a college degree is preferred, computer skills and customer service experience.

This is a part time position with no fringe benefits. Starting pay in this classification is 10.77 per hour. The typical schedule will be 20 hours per week.

Systems Administrator

Johnson City Public Library has an opening for a Systems Administrator. This position includes but is not limited to the following tasks:

  • Install, maintain, update, and repair workstations, servers, applications, and audio/visual resources; arrange for repair and replacement of computer hardware
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose technology issues involving systems, networks, and audio/visual equipment
  • Decommission used equipment through appropriate channels
  • Collect usage statistics of systems and networks
  • Train library staff in operation and use of computer systems and related peripheral devices
  • Support servers, services, and network as a backup to the Information Technology Manager
  • Perform related work as required, such as data entry, making backups, etc.
  • Work as needed: schedules may include evenings, weekends, and on-call work

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Practical knowledge of computer systems hardware, Microsoft Windows operating systems, and applications in terms of installation, configuration, system maintenance, updating, and troubleshooting
  • Ability to locate, comprehend and apply the information found online, in technical manuals and related literature with judgment and initiative to troubleshoot equipment and software problems
  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective communications and working relations with library personnel
  • Ability to train and communicate with employees
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize work and follow established procedures and work plans to meet scheduled deadlines
  • Experience in web design and development, graphic arts, and/or conducting formal training sessions would be considered a plus

Desirable Experience and Education: Must have graduated from community college or four-year university with at least an associate of science in Information Technology or equivalent.  Must have at least two years of vocational experience in the IT field.

We are looking for someone with excellent communications skills who is able to interact professionally and effectively with library staff and on occasion with the public. The successful candidate with be part of a busy team and will work under the direct supervision of the Information Technology Manager.

This is a three-quarter time position with fringe benefits. Starting pay in this classification is $12.50 per hour. The typical schedule will be 30 hours per week.
