Foundation Center Cooperating Collection

The Foundation Center Cooperating Collection is a resource for locating information about foundations, grant proposal writing, nonprofit management, fund-raising, and related subjects.

The collection operates in partnership with the      Foundation Center, a national clearinghouse for information on foundations, charitable giving, and nonprofits. The collection is located in Reference at Johnson City Public Library and consists of directories, the Foundation Directory Online Professional, and other materials.
People in the community may come to the library and access the Foundation Directory Online anytime. A librarian is available by appointment to demonstrate the use of the collection to representatives of nonprofit organizations. To access the Directory using your wireless laptop while within the library click here:  Foundation Directory Online

To make an appointment, call the Reference Desk at 434-4355. There is no fee, but the usual charges for photocopies and printouts apply.

The resources of the Foundation Center Cooperating Collection mainly provide information on foundation funding for nonprofit organizations. However, Foundation Grants to Individuals is now available online. If you are looking for government grants, or for funding to start a business, there are other resources that will be more appropriate; please ask a librarian for help.

In addition to the Foundation Center Cooperating Collection, the Library has a selection of books you can check out on such subjects as fundraising, special events, nonprofit management, and proposal writing. The Library was able to purchase books like these to check out through funding by the Harris Fund of Washington County. The Harris Fund is affiliated with the East Tennessee Foundation.

Helpful Web sites for researching funding opportunities include these:

- GuideStar , a database of IRS forms recording income, staff, salaries and expenditures for thousands of nonprofit organizations
- Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance , for information on programs, projects and services providing financial and non-financial assistance to the public
