Family Search

Johnson City Public Library is now an affiliate of FamilySearch (FamilySearch.org), the world’s largest repository of free genealogical records. JCPL patrons can order microfilm from FamilySearch for a nominal charge of $7.50 per reel. Searching for microfilm of family records and ordering is done by patrons through the FamilySearch Online Film Ordering page. (To search for microfilm order numbers, click the link on the page for Family History Library Catalog.)

On the FamilySearch site, patrons will need to create their own individual accounts and choose Johnson Public Library as the place they wish to receive their microfilm shipments. (You may click the Sign In button on the microfilm ordering page, then click Create an Account.) Loan periods are generally 90 days. Patrons will be notified when microfilm arrives. Library staff will provide assistance with the microfilm reader machine, and will return the microfilm to FamilySearch at the end of the loan period.

FamilySearch is an important  tool for online genealogical research, in addition to Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest, also available at JCPL. These tools each have their unique strengths and are best used together. Call the Reference Desk at 423-434-4454 for suggestions on  strategies to make the most of these genealogy resources.
