June Program Guide New!

We have activities and events planned for all ages at your library! Click on the link to download our monthly program guide.

Book Club for Kids

Children going into third, fourth, or fifth grades may participate in a book club on Tuesday, June 23 at 2:00 p.m. The first book to be discussed is Newbery winner Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo. Flora is a self-described cynical girl. Ulysses is a squirrel who gains superpowers after an incident with a vacuum cleaner. Flora realizes this and befriends him. More antics ensue and both characters are changed forever. Participants must register by June 6 to receive a free copy of the book. They must attend the discussion to keep the book. Please call 423-434-4458 for more information and to register for this free program.

Teen Summer Reading Program Kick-off

Teens are invited to attend the Avengers-themed kick-off program for the Johnson City Public Library’s Teen Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 1 from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. in the Jones Meeting Room. At this program, rising 6th-12th graders will learn how to register for Summer Reading, pick up a SRP information packet, and have the chance to win fabulous prizes! This will also be the first opportunity for teens to sign up for our later summer events like the heroes-themed book club and Guardians of the Galaxy party. There will also be plenty of Avengers crafts, snacks, and decorations! This program is free and open to the public and no registration is required. Call Youth Services at (423)-434-4458 for more information. The Teen Summer Reading program is sponsored by the Junior League of Johnson City, Tennessee, INC.

Using the OWL Catalog

We have assembled a useful page to help patrons adjust to the new catalog. Check it out!

Meet the New Library System

The OWL (Organization of Watauga Libraries) Consortium, consisting of Johnson City Public Library and nine other library systems in upper east Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia, has completed its migration to a new library system. Our system has a new domain name to bookmark and use: owl.sirsi.net.

During the migration, we transferred all of our library accounts, including their account information, current check outs, holds, fines, etc. You will login to your account using your library card number (such as 22488001234567) and your password (PIN). Your password will be your last name with the first letter capitalized (such as Johnson or Washington). If you experience any difficulties accessing your OWL account, please call us during regular hours at 423-434-4450.

Our system is by SirsiDynix, one of the leading library system vendors in the world. To this system, we will be adding new features and telling you about them in this space in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we invite you to explore your new catalog at owl.sirsi.net.

Comic-Con Art Contest

The Johnson City Public Library is holding an art contest as part of the 2015 Summer Reading Program. The contest is open to all ages. Art will be judged in two categories: children (12 & under) and teens/adults (13 & older). The contest is limited to one submission per person and submissions must be fandom-related comic or geek art. Submissions must be no larger than 12” x 12” with a thickness of no more than 2”. Bring submissions to the Youth Services Desk or Information Desks at the Johnson City Public Library from Friday, May 8 until Monday, June 15 (extended deadline). Top choices in both categories will be displayed in the library in June. Winners in each category will be announced at the JCPL Comic Con on Saturday, June 27. Artists may pick up their submissions at the library in the month of July. The library reserves the right to decline displaying anything deemed inappropriate for this family event. For questions, contact the Youth Services Department at (423)-434-4458 or the Reference Department at (423) 434-4454.
