The Johnson City Public Library is holding a free screening of the Oscar-award winning movie, 12 Years a Slave, on Saturday, May 17 at 1:30 p.m. in the Jones Meeting Center. In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Please note that this film is rated R for violence/cruelty, some nudity and brief sexuality.
Following the movie, the library will host a discussion group to discuss the book of the same name by Solomon Northup, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Dinah Mayo-Bobee will offer some prefatory comments and participate in the book discussion group. Dr. Mayo-Bobee is a historian at East Tennessee State University and specializes on the politics of slavery.
