21st century workers need 21st century skills. First among those skills is the ability to learn – in a change-driven workplace, it’s no longer about what to learn, but how to learn. “Lifelong learning is no longer an option, it’s a necessity. SMART is the new RICH!” (Bernie Trilling, 21st Century Skills)
Johnson City Public Library’s Career Center encourages and supports workers of all kinds – whether out of work, changing careers, desiring to excel in a current career, or taking the plunge into entrepreneurship. The library has a variety of traditional and innovative resources and services to enhance personal and professional growth and development.
From online guides, links, and resource tools that are accessible on our website 24/7 to classes and individual tutoring at the library by appointment, laptops and printers for use in the library, and the latest books and dvds on job searching, small business planning, and career advice for every level of professional development, the library has tools to help both within its walls and wherever you are .
In sync with the increasingly fluid workplace environment many of our library patrons encounter, JCPL encourages patrons to think of the Career Center as both a physical space, with “hardware” such as books and computers, and “assets” such as classes in our Instruction Center and eClasses provided by Learning Express Library and Universal Class. The transformative nature of work in the 21st century requires all of us to think outside of traditional boundaries and commit to constant exploration of new skills and learning modalities. The goal of the JCPL Career Center is to integrate digital and non-digital resources into a seamless experience for the user.
