JCPL is a member of OWL, the Organization of Watauga Libraries. All public libraries in Carter, Greene, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington counties share a common computerized catalog system. With this system, patrons can find and request books from any OWL library.

Online Learning

Universal Class   – offers hundreds of online classes taught by dedicated professionals in their fields. With real instructors guiding the video-based lessons, graded lessons & tests, certificates of achievement, and CEUs available for selected courses, students enjoy an engaging learning experience.

 Learning Express Library - Are you preparing for a professional exam? Curious about a particular occupation, or looking to improve your job skills? Use the practice tests, e-books and online courses to begin your path to a bright future.

Career Transitions  – Search for new opportunities, organize job searches, and discover new ways to match your work and military experience with new career options. Build a resume, cover letter, and get interview tips too!

Laptops, Scanners, Software, Printing

The library has a limited number of laptops that are available for job seeking with NO time limit. These laptops check out with a driver’s license and do not leave the Reference area. An optical scanner is also available.

The library offers a wide range of current software to support job seeking, small business activities, and career development, including Microsoft 2013 Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Publisher, image editing programs Paint.net, Gimp 2, and Inkscape, and Google apps such as Google Docs,  Google Sheets, and Google Slides.

Network printing is available from the library’s Computer Instruction Lab. These computers require a library card or computer center card to access. Click here for requirements to get a library card. Printing from a wifi connected device is not available. Printing rates are $0.15 per page for black & white, $0.50 per page for color.

Tutoring

JCPL offers one-on-one tutoring for those who need extra help with submitting online applications, common software programs such as MS Word, and other skills needed for today’s workplaces. Call the Reference Desk at 423-434-4454 to schedule an appointment.
