Johnson City Public Library Announces New Director

Robin Westphal

After an extensive national search, the Johnson City Public Library Board of Directors announces the hiring of Robin Westphal of Chillicothe, MO as the library’s new director. Westphal comes to Johnson City from the Livingston County Library, where she has served as director for 12 years. She fills a vacancy created in November 2016 when Bob Swanay resigned to take a position with the Carmel Clay Library in Carmel, Indiana. Cathy Griffith and Lisa Krekelberg have served as interim directors.

During her tenure as director in Livingston County, Westphal led the library through several significant milestones. Between 2008 and 2010, the Livingston County Library underwent a major renovation supported by a voter-approved $3.4 million bond issue. In 2013, the library was gifted over $7 million by former library director Lillian DesMarias. Westphal stated the DesMarias gift “changed [the] library for eternity.” The Livingston County Library was named Chamber Business of the Year in 2015. While introducing new services to reach community members and expanding library awareness, Westphal has devoted time and resources for staff development. Westphal has a master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas and a bachelor’s degree in political science and public administration from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.

“I am very pleased with our selection of Robin Westphal as the next Director of the Johnson City Public Library, and am thankful for the search committee’s thorough work,” said Board President Joy Fulkerson.  “Robin brings strong communication, leadership and management skills, and a delightful enthusiasm for public libraries as vibrant community centers. She will be an engaged partner to our stakeholders, and I know she will help the Johnson City Public Library continue its forward momentum in fulfilling our community’s needs in the future. I am happy to welcome her on board and excited to see her experience, education, and expertise in action.”

Westphal will start work as Johnson City Public Library Director in mid-June. An open house and welcome reception will be held later this summer.
